Resilience:

The world we live today throws up many challenges and uncertainty. Borrowing a term which originated from military vocabulary, the business world is now described as a VUCA environment – volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. For organizations and individuals to succeed in such an environment requires us to be able to be flexible and adapt appropriately to respond to these challenges. Essentially, we need to be resilient.

Resilience – the ability to bounce back from setbacks – is a topic which has been studied by academics and social researchers and has drawn on experiences from iconic world figures like Victor Frankl and Nelson Mandela. One of Mandela’s famous quotes was particularly telling.

“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.” 

 

Resilience is the ability to know what is actually happening in our life, rather than what we wish were happening, and to deal with our circumstances effectively. With resilience, we realize that life is not a sprint but a marathon, and that we will need patience, endurance, pacing, and faith to weather the rough spots and keep forging ahead.
